Moose in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah

I saw a lot of moose when I lived in Alaska, but after moving to Utah I was stunned at how many moose I saw when hiking in the Wasatch Mountains.  This post is simply a highlight of some of the many moose I have seen.

Above is a video I took when hiking the Dog Lake Trail. I was on the part of the trail that connects to the Mill D Trail on the way to Desolation when I saw this cow and calf. Click to see another hike up the Mill D Trail to Dog Lake with moose.

The images above are from a hike at Alta Ski Resort. I had come up through the Albion Basin and cut to the trail heading up to Germania Pass when I came across this cow moose. I followed her for about a mile before she disappeared over a ridge.

Above are a couple of bull moose I came across on the way to Desolation Lake. I came across these impressive guys while they were drinking from a creek. The started to move toward me and even though they didn’t appear to be aggressive, I decided to back off!

The moose above were also along the trail to Desolation Lake. I have hiked that trail probably 25 times and have seen moose on probably 35-40% of those hikes. By the way, the trail to Dog Lake in the snow is an amazing hike that takes off from this trail.

I was on the way to the lakes above Brighton Ski Resort toward the end of last summer and came across 6 moose! Above are several shots from that hike.

The moose above were also on the Brighton Lakes hike. There were 5 bulls and one cow and one of the bulls was enormous! He didn’t appear happy that I was so close and stared me down. Although the big bull didn’t charge, I backed off carefully and quickly!
