Skiing Honeycomb Canyon at Solitude, Utah

OK, this isn’t a hiking post – BUT it is about my passion in the winter when I’m not on the hiking trails. Click on any photo to enlarge it.

Utah has incredible skiing and Solitude is no exception.  Solitude Mountain Resort  is smaller than the more well-known resorts of Alta, Snowbird and Park City, but I love the place.  I won’t go into all the reasons now, but I will say that Solitude has everything I want in a ski area.

Honeycomb Canyon at Solitude is amazing  The scenery is incredible and the skiing is challenging.  Even at the tender age of 68, I can do a lot of the very challenging terrain here!

From the top of the Summit Express chairlift, I like to take a traverse below the Honeycomb Cliffs.  The video above shows this traverse.  From the traverse I can drop in to gullies and trees in a number of areas and they’re all awesome!

The video above is me dropping through trees on Voltaire and coming out at the bottom where it joins Woodlawn.

By the way, getting up to Honeycomb Canyon via the Summit Express lift is an amazingly scenic ride!

The map below will give you an idea of what Honeycomb Canyons and the cliffs above look like on a trail map.

Take a look at this area from a summer short video I posted about the view from Honeycomb Cliffs in summer.

By the way, I hiked across the ridge at the top of the Honeycomb Cliffs in the summer.  It was a good challenge, but a stunningly beautiful hike!  Also on the other side if the cliffs is another amazing I took to the Price of Wales Mine.  Below are images from my hike to the Prince or Wales Mine.

Solitude is in Big Cottonwood Canyon and is not at all far from the Salt Lake City Metro area.  At the top of the canyon is the resort of Brighton.  Across Guardsman Pass is Park City and in the next canyon to the south, Little Cottonwood Canyon, are Alta and Snowbird.
