Hiking To Scout Falls, Utah

Scout Falls is another of Utah’s gorgeous waterfalls. It is accessed off the Mt. Timpanogos Timpooneke trail from the Aspen Grove parking area.

The trail is just about 3 miles round trip with a little over 800 feet of elevation gain. It crosses a few streams so be prepared to get a bit muddy or wet depending on conditions. The trail can be dry and dusty or a bit wet and muddy. Click HERE for a trail map.

The creek that flows below the trail is noticeable after a while, hikers will usually hear it before they see it. The falls can be seen on the in the distance on the left and hikers will know when they are getting close to the turn to the falls.

When the trail to Scout Falls leaves the main Mt. Timpanogos Trail things can be pretty tricky for hikers with kids or people not in good condition, so exercise caution beyond this point.

The water that flows over Scout Falls comes from a large area of snow melting above the falls along Mt. Timpanogos and neighboring peaks. Peak flow over the falls is in the spring. I have hiked to Scout Falls when the flow was very strong and later in the summer when it is much less dramatic. My best luck for the most dramatic flow has been mid-May to early June, but this can change from year to year.

As was mentioned earlier, the trail to get to Scout Falls starts at Aspen Grove is in American Fork Canyon and can be reached from two directions. One way to get there is from the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway via E. Provo Canyon Rd. from Orem, Utah. The other is from the other end of the Alpine Scenic Loop from Highland, UT. What to take if you want to hike to scout Falls? The hike is relatively short, but summer days can be hot so take plenty of water. Have snacks and drinks in the car for when you return. If you take snacks on the trail, please don’t pack your trash out with you. But spray can be helpful in the spring. Sunscreen is a good idea as well. Wear decent hiking shoes. The trail is rocky in places and as I said before, the last push to the falls is a bit tricky so you will want good traction.

IF you go, please check conditions and parking availability several days before you go. Click HERE for trail and parking information. Aspen Grove is where several extremely popular trail start and parking can fill up very early in the day, especially on weekends. Study the trails on a map before you go and also when you arrive.

Keep in mind that the Scenic Alpine Loop is only during summer months so it would be wise to check road conditions before going. There is also a fee to park at Aspen Grove. Click HERE for trail and parking information. Click HERE for a map of the trailhead.
